Nathaniel Thompson was the love of Isabel Salisbury's life. When they were finally betrothed she couldn't be happier in expectation of her future with the man she held so dearly. When Nathaniel leaves England on a mission for the war office, he doesn't realize he is leaving Isabel open to her family's devices. When Nathaniel doesn't return, Isabel is married off to a duke who is nothing but a reprobate leaving Isabel unhappy and unloved. When Nathaniel finally returns to England discovering Isabel married another devastates him but then finds out she has been left a widow. Does he have a chance to win her heart again? He has no idea what this sham of a marriage did to her spirit. Isabel loved Nathaniel so fiercely but his years away left her bereft and her husband's continual betrayals made her wary of ever having happiness again. Seeing her again, Nathaniel knows Isabel is his destiny, but convincing her is another matter all together. Before his death, Isabel's husband was having am illicit affair with a married woman and after Isabel's spouse's death, the husband of his lover is determined to seek recompense for the affair at Isabel's expense. Even though she was an innocent in the matter, the man has no shame in wanting to bring Isabel down. When Nathaniel finds all of this out, his protective instincts for the woman he still loves reemerges, but that instinct to be close to Isabel also puts her reputation in danger. Will this pair who seem so destined to be together overcome all the obstacles put in their paths? Will Isabel trust her love for Nathaniel and allow their happily ever after to come to fruition? Find out all this and more by reading SCANDAL AT VAUXHALL by Layna Pimental.SCANDAL AT VAUXHALL (Pleasure Garden Follies Book 1) is my first foray into reading this author and I am very happy to have read this engaging story. I love second chance romances and this is a prime example of why I do. The unhappily married widow reunites with the love of her life after so much heartache is placed in their paths. Isabel's maturity after her failed marriage is enlightening and more attractive once Nathaniel returns and must work for her heart. His determination is key to their happiness and watching their give and take is so good. An enjoyable read!

Disclosure: I received this book from the tour organizer as part of the book tour. Thank you to CBLS Promotions and to Layna Pimentel for the opportunity. Yes, this is an honest review.* * *A love interrupted: Isabel and Nathaniel were in love and were all set to marry after Nathaniel's return from his trip for the war office, but Isabel's ambitious parents had set their sights higher and wed her to the Duke of Brimley. Isabel endured a loveless marriage and a faithless husband but it all came to an end when her husband was killed in a duel. Now Isabel is a widow and Nathaniel is back, hoping to rekindle the love they shared before -- but Isabel is being threatened by her late husband's enemy and her plans of escape to Vauxhall and Bath take a scandalous turn when Nathaniel decides to accompany her. There are a lot of obstacles in our hero and heroine's way to love:1. Nathaniel's mother is against the match.2. Isabel's reputation isn't exactly pristine because of her husband's philandering -- and her finances aren't very solid.3. There is already an understanding between Nathaniel's mother and Lady Eloise Morton.4. The Duke of Downsbury, the man Isabel's husband cuckolded, will stop at nothing to make Isabel pay for her late husband's sins. This is a story with a promising premise: I loved that Nathaniel has waited for Isabel all these years and wants to marry her, despite the scandalous death of her husband. His initial intention was to court her properly but, circumstances have led them to a more unconventional path of courtship.Isabel felt him pulling her closer as his arm at the small of her back pushed her in. His head dipped down, and, naturally, she looked up at him, ignoring every stare and whisper as they moved together. She finally cringed and mustered the courage to ask him the one thing weighing heavily on her mind. "Why did you take so long? Why didn't you come sooner? Nathaniel, there hasn't been a day I haven't thought of you."As the music wound down and the dancers departed, Isabel locked her eyes on his and felt a tear escape. "You've been missed greatly, My Lord."His thumb swiped away the drop. "My dear, there hasn't been a day, hour, or dream you haven't occupied."- pp. 13-14I had problems with the narrative time and the abruptness in which the author moves time forward. Chapter 1 begins with Isabel pondering her current situation and ends with news of the duel between her husband and the Duke of Downsbury. Chapter 2 is six months later and Isabel is leaving London to avoid the wrath of the Duke of Downsbury -- she travels to Vauxhall and Bath with her friends, the Turners and Nathaniel. Chapter 6 confused me a bit, when Isabel finds herself in an "interesting" position and her stomach is already "burgeoning" (p. 79) in Chapter 7. I wish the author took the time to flesh out some details: Isabel's dire financial straits is hinted upon and we only see a glimpse of how badly-off she is when it is her housekeeper who serves her and it seems she only has a butler. But, in a later chapter, when she is talking to her staff, it seems that she has some money because she has promised to see them all settled. Some questions:1. Why is Nathaniel's mother referred to as the Dowager Countess but Nathaniel is a Marquess?2. Why was Isabel worried that Nathaniel would not be allowed in the House of Lords after a blind item about them appeared in the newspaper? (p. 52) 3. Why didn't the Duke of Downsbury flee after he killed Isabel's husband in a duel? Wasn't dueling illegal then? Then he engages in a second duel with Nathaniel.4. What happened to Isabel's husband's heir? Is there an heir?At 94 pages, this was a quick read and the author does a good job in showing how mad for gossip and scandal the Ton was during the Regency -- how valuable public opinion was. The romance between Isabel and Nathaniel and the rekindled romance of the two starts and ends well -- but the middle part of the book needs a bit more attention.

Why do they call Vauxhall the Pleasure Gardens? That is what Isabel Salisbury will find out during the coarse of the story. The story begins with Isabel and her love Nathaniel Thompson becoming betrothed. However, his duties to the war office call him away for a long period of time and he soon finds that Isabel was married off to a reprobate called Henry Griffith, the Duke of Brimley. His penchant for sleeping with other peer's wives, finally lands him into a duel with The Duke of Downsbury. Isabel, having found out about her husbands infidelities, wants to witness the duel. The outcome may seem like a boon, but Isobel soon finds out that her troubles are only beginning. The Duke of Downsbury is intent of making Isabel's life just as miserable and threatens with her downfall. He causes most of the antagonism in the story. It's when Isabel and Nathiel are witnessed (by Downsbury) having a naughty tryst in the gardens that the rest of the story starts getting interesting. I really did find it hard to take a liking to Isabel. Her swooning seemed exaggerated and I did not agree with her thought processes. She just wanted to run away and although she did mention checking into her husband's estate activities and monies, she never did. Nathaniel did it all for her. I did like the antagonists of the story, or should I say, the part they played in the story. Because, not only was there Downsbury, but also Nathaniel's scheming mother. Usually, scheming mothers come to their senses, but she appeared to have no sense at all. Willing to sacrifice her daughter's happiness, knowing that the man she picked out was not of good character. It made the story more interesting. The ending kind of threw me off because even though Isabel and Nathaniel finally end up together, the threat of Downsbury is still there and Nathaniel's mother has not given up on her scheming. It ends in a cliffhanger in that aspect. So I highly recommend reading this book first. *I received the re-edited version of this story in exchange for an honest review*

This was the first book of Layna Pimental that I've read and I absolutely loved it, I couldn't put it down. I give a High 5 Stars to Scandal at Vauxhall (Pleasure Garden Follies, Book 1) by Layna Pimental, she writes a sensual and deeply romantic tale that takes the reader on quite a ride!Duchess Isabel has been in love with the Marquess of Stoughton, Nathanial ever since her youth and before going off to war he'd asked for her hand in marriage, which she gladly gave. During his leave, however, her father arranged for her to be married to the Duke of Brimley. During her marriage to Brimley, her life is a shambles and he's turned out to be nothing but a gambler and drunk and rather rough in the marriage bed. She's been left sad and childless... her heart still belongs to Nathanial and she longs to see him again, however, she's learned that he'd been killed in the war. At a high ball, Duchess Isabel to her astonishment sees Nathanial as he enters the ball, she's so overjoyed to learn he's not been killed after all. During the ball there is a dilemma, Isabel is informed that Duke Brimley has been found having an affair with the Duchess of Downsbury and her husband, the Duke of Downsbury has challenged Brimley to a duel. Isabel is startled but yet part of her is relieved when her husband is killed in the duel. Her life has been in shambles and she's longed so much to be with Nathanial. He too has longed for her and seeing her at the ball brought back all the memories and enlivened the love he has for her even more. This strong desire has pulled at both of the so much so that they are soon caught in an improper and compromising situation at the Vauxhall Gardens causing a great scandal. Nathanial wants to make it right and save Isabel's reputation and make her his bride. Will Isabel accept? Will she and Nathanial survive this scandal and regain their proper place in society?Pimental has a gift for writing a wonderful historical tale of love, passion and splashes of suspense and surprise. I highly recommend Scandal at Vauxhall by Layna Pimental!

If only her parents had listened to her Isabel Salisbury would not be subjected to the cruel statements inflicted on her by the philandering Duke of Brimley. There is only one woman he wishes to marry and she is unattainable and he refuses to cause her any further distress.Until one fateful night followed by a life changing duel. Isabel’s head knows that she must not become attached to Nathaniel, the scandals of her life would affect his place in society and his position in the House of Lords. But her heart and soul long for what could have been.Nathaniel is relieved that Isabel no longer faces the scandals of her husband and refuses to cause her any further unrest. However, he is determined to finally make her his Marchioness. She has the ability to draw you into the story and feel each emotion of the characters – to me the markings of an excellent writer. I received this book from the author for an honest review.A short story with lots of promise but the many gaps in the story line made it difficult to read at times. Loosing the thoughts as the author jumped form scene to scene with no bridge to connect the dots. It had a good plot but lacked the execution to make it a great book. Developed with more depth the characters could be more believable so that you could really connect with them, finding it lacking at times. Leaving you almost clueless at the build up.Fast paced and set in 1815, England, the main characters found themselves separated due to unforeseen circumstances. Which caused them many heartache and problems over a time. Forced into an unhappy marriage Isabel knew only the pain of betrayal and scandal but an unexpected twist in the story opened the door for these two to come together. Nathan was determined to regain the love of Isabel, once betrothed too each other. Feeling strong about his feelings for her and not willing to cave under pressure. The ton's acceptance of a scandal almost ruining their reputations. Nathan's mother, an absolute pain that wanted to drove them apart, together with an obnoxious man that was only interested in his own gain without any regards to his wife or any other woman he came across, made for some interesting scenes.

I was given an arc for my honest opinion and review. What to do when the love of you're life leaves but asks for your hand before he goes just for your father to still give you to another? This is lady Isabel's misfortune, she is forced to wed a mean cad . Luck is on her hands newly widowed and her love is back in town. will she let by gone be by gone or keep her independence ? Nathanael just returned and has one goal on his mind, to get his love back and make her his duchess, but time changes all and he will not give up to have her even if he must abandon his mother and her loose tongue.great read and a must to your collection, I for one cant wait till next book is released.

Isabel had to live with the scandal from her husband the Duke. Nathaniel and Isabel were in love before he went off to the war office. Nathaniel was there for Isabel whether she wanted him to be or not. Nathaniel was a great guy and Isabel didn't deserve they way she had been treated by her family, husband, and the ton. This was a good story and I enjoyed the way Nathaniel stuck up for Isabel and helped her when she needed his help. These two were great together!
