RINGSIDE is an ongoing series set within the world of professional wrestling, written by JOE KEATINGE (SHUTTER, GLORY, TECH JACKET) and drawn by acclaimed illustrator NICK BARBER, combining the ensemble drama of THE WALKING DEAD with interconnected rotating perspectives akin to The Wire. Each issue will explore the relationship between art and industry from the view of the wrestlers themselves, the creatives they work with, the suits in charge and the fans cheering them all on. But that's just the beginning. The real violence is outside the ring....

I expected more wrestling but this book felt more like a crime book. Although, professional wrestling is going to be focus of later issues, I think the creative team missed an opportunity by going with the crime story angle. This reader would have wanted more since it's the draw to this book.
[Image Comics] FIRST ISSUES: The Bad (Full review on the WondrousBooks blog.) That’s a No-no right there. There is particularly nothing that I enjoyed about Ringside. I guess it might be interesting to some, but for me it was just a comic book repetition of the Rocky, Warrior and Southpaw type of movies.I also disliked the drawings – in many panels all we see are barely human-shaped splashes of colors and detail is something that is overall missing.
Joe Keatonge once again proves his writing chops as he nails the voices of his main character wrestlers ("You saving your money?"). A good start of a first issue. The only downside is the art. It's flat, simple and blocky, and the inking looks like it was done with a finger on an ipad, especially on things like the lettering of signs. Hopefully Barber will improve as the series continues.
I am really, really excited about this book. I like how it combines elements of crime drama (like James Sallis' Drive) with the world of fading professional wrestlers. I can't wait to read issue 2.
Strong first issue. Interested to see if this takes a vigilante turn as anticipated.
