Свирепия 7: Тюлени Алфа Reviews
This was the first Rogue Warrior novel I ever read ad the one that made me a Marcinko fan in the first place, back in 1999, a few months before I shipped off to Air Force (or "Air Farce" as Demo Dick calls it), and re-reading it 17 years later, with the benefit of military, law enforcement, and overseas security contracting experience under my belt, it holds a sentimental value for me. As someone who majored in International Relations in college with an emphasis in East Asia, I appreciate the Japanese and Chinese plot elements, and as a USAF veteran, it's good to see Dick portray some facet of the Air Force in a positive light for once, that being USAF Special Operations Command (in the form of cool cat AFSOC pilot Lt. Col. Arch Kielly). But there are a few things I gotta nitpick. I realize Demo Dick is a firm believer in Murphy's Law, i.e. "Anything that can go wrong, will," but come on, man, over and over and over again in every book, some piece of equipment has to fail (whether the chute cords tangling up or the ultra-reliable HK MP5 jamming or misfiring) and Dick repeatedly breaks his nose and smashes his shin??And speaking myself as a former USAF Security Forces troop, something else I gotta nitpick (from p. 291 of the Nook edition): Hey Dickie-boy, unlike the MPs and Shore Patrols in the sister services, we "Air Farce" sky cops sure as hell *do* carry magazines in the butts of our M9 pistols; hell, we ever carry a round in the chamber!
Seal Force Alpha is written by Richard Marcinko, the famous Commanding Officer of SEAL Team Six. It belongs to the Rogue Warrior series, which starts with Marcinko's autobiography, followed by a number of fictional sequels, including this novel. Although the characters (except Marcinko himself) and events depicted in the book are fictional, it's obviously written from author's first-hand experience. The novel is narrated in the first person, using rowdy language, full of military jargon and humor. It makes you feel as if you were sitting next to Marcinko in a pub, drinking beer and listening to him telling his war stories. This effect is even more pronounced in the audio edition, which is read by Marcinko himself. This form of narration, in conjunction with the fact that the author clearly knows what he's writing about, makes this book very authentic.Seal Force Alpha does not offer much in terms of the writing quality. The plot is a simple story, in which a covert military operation is a universal remedy for every political problem of the USA. The characters are defined only to the extent required tell the story. The book will probably not appeal to an average reader, but it is a must-read for anyone interested in the subject of black ops.
Once again, Richard Marcinko has written an action-filled book that kept me not just on the edge of my seat, but laughing at times. Marcinko and his merry band of Seals are sent on a mission to seize and destroy a Chinese freighter suspected of carrying all kinds of stolen materials to aid and abet the Chinese in their clandestine missions around the world. After a tense fight, Marcinko and his Fellow Seals destroy the ship and find the treasure trove of equipment that was described. But when he and his troops return, they run into doublespeak and political barriers. After a lot of dogging, Marcinko finds an even deeper problem and takes it on in typical Rogue Warrior style.
#6 in the Rogue Warrior series.Special Warfare - fiction - The Rogue Warrior combats Chinese forces who have a pipeline from the White House
Awesome. Funny. Smart Ass meets serious situation plus Mr. Murphy of Murphy's Law screwing it up.
