My daughter Addie just turned 14 months old, and along with her love of books, she really enjoys colors and figuring out how to develop her creativity. I picked up Lorinda: A Set of Six Books, published by Dorrance Publishing, to read with her during bed and nap time. It's about a young girl, named Lorinda, who loves to paint. Each night Lorinda chooses a painting on her bedroom wall that she wants to adventure in, blinks her eyes, and magically she's there! Here is the description on the back of the book: "Lorinda, a young artist, dreams of traveling to faraway places. But are they dreams?Every night Lorinda blinks her eyes and is whisked away to the middle of her paintings. From colouring the rainbow with her fairy friends to eating cheese sandwiches with the man in the moon, Lorinda explores the reaches of her imagination and takes you and your child along with her. It's up to you to decide if it's really a dream."Before even opening this book, I was excited to read it with Addie because of the front cover. It's very colorful and makes you want to break it open and see what's going to happen.I was a bit disappointed when we did.I loved the idea of a book about a creative young child. The stories themselves were cute. Lorinda goes on a picnic with her forest friends, does acrobatics in a circus, competes in a sand-castle-building competition, paints the rainbow with her fairy friends, eats cheese and drinks milk with the man in the moon, and visited her farm friends. It is definitely a book that young kids would enjoy reading. However, I found that the stories were a bit choppy and jumped around. I felt like it read as though each paragraph or so should have been on it's own page with it's own picture. I think it may have read a little more smoothly that way.I was very disappointed in the amount of pictures in this book and the lack of color. Shouldn't a book about a very creative young girl going on adventures IN her paintings have more color on the inside? The few pictures they did have were black and white and very simple. My daughter wasn't as interested as she would have been if there had been more colorful pictures to keep her attention while I read.I would recommend this book to kids older than 3 who are able to pay attention and imagine the scenes for themselves. Overall I would give it 4 out of 5 stars for writing content, 2 out of 5 stars for illustration.Click here to pick up a copy for yourself: Lorinda: A Set of Six Books
